South and Southeast Asia represent one third of the world's population, having rapidly growing economies and populations. Densely populated and with a younger average age than many developed nations, the opportunity to bring digital transformation of education to these dynamic populations can create a broader impact and improve the educational experience and livelihoods of millions.
Panl is emulating and adapting from the success of past and on-going digital transformation projects from Italy to Japan's GIGA Project.
As one of the earliest countries to be hit hard by COVID-19, Italy was forced to rapidly lock down its society — but its schools were unprepared for mandatory distance learning. Italy’s Ministry of Education put out a public call for support, and within days of closing physical classrooms, the Ministry had teamed up with Google and telecom companies to provide G Suite for Education to all Italian schools so that students could continue with classes during the shutdown.
The Japan government has launched an initiative called GIGA (Global Innovation Gateway for All) that will allow local boards of education to provides a device for each student in Grades 1-9. About half of Boards of Education are selecting Google for Education (Chromebooks and Google Workspace for Education) for it's security, ease of management, and because it's great for collaborative, student centered learning.
